Poor baby!

In the interest of keeping an accurate record, and letting people know what is happening in our lives, I am including this post on the health of my little prince.

At Owen's one year check up he had plummeted to almost off the charts for his weight. To give some reference, he was pretty average when he was six months old, now he is in the 5th percentile. Needless to say, there was concern, both from the doctors as well as his parents.

After several attempts to take blood, they concluded that he was very borderline for Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA). Apparently the acid/base imbalance in his blood inhibited the absorption of nutrients. The kid eats like a horse and never gains from it. The doctor called in a prescription, and if FINALLY arrived this week (thank you mail order drug company that I am NOT in love with!!). We received over 60 ounces of medication as his three month supply. He is supposed to take 2 teaspoons twice a day. It is a NIGHTMARE getting that much medication into a one year old. We tried it straight, in water, and finally in juice. He was not a fan of it in any form.
Long story short, the kid had...digestive issues as a result. We took him to the doctor today after he stained his onesie and pajamas with a nice pink tint. Definitely a cause for concern. Now he is off meds (anybody need approximately 60 ounces of RTA meds??) and onto a ridiculously high fat/high calorie diet. Life is rough, eh? Well, he gets yummy food, but Tom has been calling him "baboon butt" for the last day or two, so I guess you have to take the good with the bad. Anybody have any high fat/high calorie musts that I could try?

I used to put butter on Parley's p.b.&j. sandwiches because the doctors were concerned about his weight at one point. The doctor told me to get lots of butter and mayo in his diet where ever I could. Hopefully this is helpful, good luck!

I'm sorry! Matthew had RTA, we mixed it in applesauce and rice cereals and I can't remember what else. I hope this new diet works.

My entire diet is high fat/high calorie. Maybe he should just move in with us :)

Okay, that sucks for the little boyeeeee!! I asked Leah for her medicinal advice and she first suggested that you not get rid of the medication. She said that he may not be able to take it now, but there might come a time when he HAS to have it and it would suck to have to buy it again. Also, there is a high calorie idea that she had. It's called Scandishake! It sounds weird but google it. It comes in three flavors and it is 600 calories in one shake! She said it's okay for kids too but to check with his doctor before! There ya go bebe!! Love you!! Kiss O!!
